So you have finally made the decision that you want to move abroad, your tired of the British weather and you have chosen your destination southern Spain. Here I am going to give you my own experience of moving to Almeria in Southern Spain and try to help you understand some of the most important things you should know before you take that big step.

My experience is based on Almeria in Andalusia southern Spain, where I have now lived for the past 10 years and love it here not only for the mild weather but the great out doors life style. The people of Almeria are very friendly and laid back, their favourite word is Manana. The next step is to decide on whether to buy or rent a property. My suggestion is to rent first for at least the first year because after this time you will know whether living in Spain is for you.

 I have met many British people that after only 8 months find that Spain is not really what they thought and have returned to the UK. Rental agreements in Spain are normally for 11 months after this you will get the option to either renew your rental or terminate it so if you decided living is Spain isn’t for you then there is no problem. I know of lots of people that have come over here, bought a great property and then decided that they hate it and want to move to a different area but they can’t do this until they have sold their property and they have ended up very unhappy and homesick.

Choosing to rent or to buy is an important decision, take your time and think hard about renting first. You will need to look at as many properties as possible to get a good idea of what is available for your budget and if you can rent in the area that you plan on buying in, this will give you a head start when you finally decide to buy. For me shopping and visiting the local bars and restaurants in the area that I wanted to live in made a big difference and helped me choose exactly the right spot for me.

 If you are considering working in Spain then you will need to be fluent in Spanish you will find it difficult to find a job if all you know is a few basic words, thats why it's a good idea to learn how to start an online business as a back up, remember even if you think it will be ok to work in an English bar or restaurant and will have to speak the local clients in Spanish. Also remember here in Spain work can be very seasonal and you may struggle in the winter so try to have a back up just in case you get laid off in the winter.

 So there you have it, a few basic things to do before you make that move to Spain, here is my checklist.
1. Learn basic Spanish, do take a course before you leave England.
 2. Think hard about renting first so you can get use to the Spanish life style,
3. Try and do as much research on the area you have chosen as possible, it may be very nice in the summer but what is it like in the winter months.
If it’s a tourist area it may be easier to find work.
4. If you know what work you want to do, check the local newspapers in the area to see what jobs are advertised. You can now do this online.

when you do arrive in Spain, try and take some time to just relax a little and don’t do too much when you first get there, there will be a lot to do but if you take it slowly you will make the right decisions and be able to enjoy your new live in the Sun. Having worked as a carpenter in Spain for 10 years refurbishing bars for new British owners, I have seen many come and go.

The idea is nearly always the same, open the bar about 11am and once your hired help has served the first few customers, pop out to the beach or do a bit of shopping and have lunch out. Well this is a path to disaster and although you may make some money to start with, trade will soon drop off. There are a few steps to take until your Spanish is adequate.

1) Many new bar owners have found a way around the language problem by hiring a local Spanish waiter who is bilingual.

Its all well and good being able to say hello and thank you in Spanish but once you can have a conversation on the telephone in Spanish, you will be more comfortable and enjoy the life style, plus you will not need to pay for extra staff to translate for you and that will be a great saving.

 

Even though the weather in Spain is great most of the year, the bar trade in Spain is very sensitive to the tourist season. Although in Spain, many British bars fail to cater for the Spanish, they are here all year round and if looked after will bring in regular income to get you through the quieter months, try to offer different things in your bar as the Spanish like to try out new bars but also do lay on the tapas and local dishes because they will expect it and if they can’t get it at your bar they will go a few doors down the road.
